The Cometic Gasket brand is a well-known American company specializing in gaskets, and it originated in the performance world. The family-run business started back in 1989 with 900 different types, but today, the range has expanded to more than 85,000!

Alloy

Cometic offers three different types of alloy materials: copper, stainless steel, and aluminum.

• Copper
  Copper, for example, is resistant to corrosion and has high thermal conductivity. These alloys are applied using 99.9% pure copper.
  Thicknesses in inches: .005, .010, .016, .020, .027, .032, .043, .050, .063, .080 and .094.
• Stainless steel
  This stainless steel is cold rolled to increase its tensile strength and yield strength.
  Thicknesses in inches: .012, .0158, .016, .020, .025, .031 and .100.
• Aluminium
  Here, 6061 alloyed aluminium is used. The tensile and bending strength is very high, which makes the material ideal for more extreme applications.
  Thicknesses in inches: .010, .016, .020, .025, .032, .040, .047, .050, .063, .080, .100, .125, .160, .188, .217, .250, .313, .375, .500 and .625.
  

Coatings

The metal coatings provide improved temperature resistance and increased strength. The various coatings include rubber-coated steel, proprietary high-temperature coating, and AFM.

• AFM
  The AFM coating should definitely be mentioned. This consists of a chemically inflated nitrile rubber that is combined with an aluminium core. This treatment makes the gasket resistant to temperatures higher than 120 degrees Celsius. These gaskets do not require sealants and do not need to be retightened.

Cylinder head gaskets with multi-protection layers

Regarding cylinder heads, Cometic has several special options for the protection, resistance, and strength of these gaskets.

• MLS gaskets
  These Multi-Layer-Steel gaskets are produced with three or five layers of stainless steel, which provides more strength and less corrosion. A relief is applied to the outer layers of the gasket, which is then coated with a Viton rubber material. This coating meets heavy-duty requirements in relation to sealing, loading and surface finish. In addition, the coating is also resistant to temperatures of 250 degrees Celsius. The middle layer (fill layer) consists of uncoated stainless steel that can be produced using an adjusted thickness to achieve the perfect fit for your application.

• MLX gaskets
  The MLX or 'Multi-Layer-Xtreme' gaskets contain an additional layer that creates surface deformation, which prevents the combustion seal from bending. The embossed and patented high-temperature coatings provide microsealing against liquids around the surface of the cylinder head and engine block.

• HP gaskets
